Hyatt Privé vs Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts vs Virtuoso
By CP (Chang Peng Lua), Fora Travel Advisor · August 2026
Ask which luxury booking program is "best" and you'll get confident, contradictory answers — because the question is wrong. Hyatt Privé, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, and Virtuoso aren't competing versions of the same thing — they're three differently shaped programs with different hotel footprints, different stacking rules, and different ideal users. The right one depends on the trip. Here's the comparison I walk clients through.
What each program actually is
Hyatt Privé is Hyatt's own luxury advisor program, covering a curated set of the group's top-end properties — Park Hyatt, Alila, Andaz, Miraval, Thompson, and the strongest Grand Hyatt resorts, plus luxury partners within Hyatt's orbit. It's accessible only through Privé-affiliated advisors; Fora holds access, which is how I book it.
Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts is a card benefit. If you hold the Platinum Card (personal or business) or Centurion, you can book FHR through Amex Travel across a broad portfolio spanning most luxury brands — Four Seasons, Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, Ritz-Carlton, Aman, and many independents.
Virtuoso is the largest luxury travel consortium, a network of agencies with negotiated amenities at over a thousand hotels worldwide. It has the widest footprint of the three by far, including boutique independents that no card program or brand program touches.
There's real overlap: many hotels sit in two or all three programs. That's where the comparison gets interesting, because the same hotel can deliver noticeably different value depending on which channel books it.
Which hotels participate where
Footprint is where the programs separate most cleanly. Privé is narrow and deep: only Hyatt-orbit luxury properties, but the strongest ones — Park Hyatt Tokyo, Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, Alila resorts, Andaz Maui and the like. FHR is broad across famous luxury brands but selective within them; not every Four Seasons or Rosewood participates, and the portfolio shifts. Virtuoso is the long tail: it covers most of what FHR covers plus hundreds of independents, safari lodges, and boutique properties that exist in no other program.
The practical consequence: for a Park Hyatt stay, Privé is almost always the answer. For a Four Seasons stay, the real contest is FSPP versus FHR (a separate article of mine covers that). For a boutique hotel in Provence or a lodge in Botswana, Virtuoso is often the only program in the room.
How I actually choose for clients
That triage is, frankly, a large part of what an advisor is for. The programs are free to you in every case; the skill is knowing which one to deploy where.
